Purpose:

Advanced laboratories allow you to begin researching more in depth topics than a normal lab. Researching these topics gives your camp the ability to begin building things like nuclear weapons, patriot and cruise missiles, and eventually a space center. Like any other research each level increase does factor into your overall score calculation, thus more research means a higher score. One level of research does not equal one point of score, though, so it may not be as easily noticed as some other things, although building nukes does give you a 25,000 point boost with each one constructed. In the end, advanced labs provide a number of useful advantages for your camp.

Advanced Labs require both power and disposables to run. They also have a high staffing cost and a high worker cost to construct. This is a building you probably will not open until later in the game, so these should not be too much of a consideration, but you will want to keep these in mind. Like any other building, you will build it through the Construct page.

In the advanced lab you will research two main fields of research, fission and rocketry. These two fields contain five topics apiece that you must research to certain set levels in order to open specific weaponry and capabilities. Unlike in earlier research, each of these individual topics does not have any specific effect on parts of the game. It is only by researching all of these topics that you see the desired effects.

Opening Requirements:

In order to open the Advanced Lab as a building that you can construct you will need to research each of the first level green topics from the Learn page to at least level 10 and the second (blue) and third (purple) level topics to at least 5. Once you have met these requirements you can build as many Advanced Labs as you can afford, taking into account available land, building supplies, power, and staffable population. When you have built at least one, you will set your research using the Advanced Lab page.

Improvements:

The only real way to improve the speed of research in your Advanced Labs is to build more. More labs lead to faster research, but only to a certain extent. If you set your class as Nerd when you sign up, then you will get a special research bonus that allows you to research topics at a slightly faster rate than other classes. As there is no way to improve your construction rate, the only way to build Advanced Labs faster is to assign more workers in the Construct page.

Limitations:

The limits on your Advanced Labs lie in two places. First there are the limits to building them. You must have enough power and disposables to run the labs you build as well as enough staff to work in them. The other limits lie in researching. The more labs you have, the faster you can research, in general, though eventually, you will begin to see your daily returns decrease. The progression of advanced research is very similar to basic research in that both the amount of research you have in that area and the total amount of research you have will decrease the speed with which you gain new. Also, you must have at least one advanced lab in your camp to access your missile hub and space center, even after opening these through research.

Displays:

When you go to the Advanced Labs page, you will see the basic displays for this building. This display shows you your current research level for each of the topics and which topic you are currently researching. You can also change what you are researching on this page.

Top Bar Advanced Research DisplayYou can also keep a check on how your research is progressing using the display on the top bar. Here you will be able to watch how much your research is increasing each turn without having to visit the Advanced Labs page.

The Advanced Lab row from the Your Camp's Buildings table on the Construct page

On the Construct page you can find Advanced Labs towards the bottom of the "Your Camp's Buildings" table. Here you can change how many active labs you have and see what the cost in power, disposables, and population is for the labs that you have active.

When building you can also look at the Peoples page for details about excess disposables and at either of the infrastructure displays for excess power.

Special Considerations When Demolishing:

Though researching each of the topics in the Advanced Lab page beyond 30 will not provide you any benefit other than a slight score increase (once again, not one that you would probably ever notice), you must keep at least one Advanced Lab built and active in order to access certain advanced features, like the Nuke Factory or Missile Hub.
